Perugia at the table: an osteria, truffles and two ways to stop

About 3 min read

You can begin to read a city through a question asked before ordering: where does this ingredient come from? For this first stop in Perugia, we have chosen two places whose own descriptions put ingredients at the centre. One looks across Umbrian produce; the other concentrates on truffles.

This is not a ranking or a summary of the city's entire cuisine. These are two starting points for a lunch or dinner in the centre. The selection draws on information published by the restaurants and checked on 28 October 2026. We do not describe tastings or visits we have not made.

Osteria a Priori — the region enters the pantry

At Via dei Priori 39, Osteria a Priori describes cooking inspired by Umbrian traditions and work with small regional producers. Alongside the dining space is a shop selling wines, oils, pulses and other foods.

That connection between what you order and what you can take home is the reason for our choice. For a visitor, it can provide a concrete memory of lunch: ask for a producer's name, learn how to use a pulse, or choose a bottle after discussing it.

There is no need to seek a compulsory checklist of dishes. Read the available menu and ask which ingredients matter most at that moment. It is a more useful question than simply asking what is typical, because it lets the restaurant speak about its own cooking.

Address: Via dei Priori 39, Perugia.

Al Tartufo — a more focused choice

Al Tartufo, at Via Ulisse Rocchi 4, presents a kitchen centred on fresh seasonal truffles. Its website includes fresh pasta preparations and other dishes built around that ingredient.

We include it as an alternative to a broader repertoire. It may suit a meal devoted to one ingredient rather than an attempt to represent an entire region. Before booking, ask which truffles are being served, in which dishes and whether supplements apply.

These distinctions also make the choice clearer: fresh truffle and a truffle sauce or another processed product are not the same description. Reading the menu and asking the staff helps you decide beyond the restaurant's name.

Choosing your stop

Start with the time and curiosity you have. An osteria connected to a shop invites you to explore several products; a restaurant devoted to truffles narrows the focus. You do not need to visit both to give a trip meaning. A considered choice can leave more room than a crowded itinerary.

Check availability, menus and the overall cost directly, and mention dietary requirements when booking. These addresses provide orientation, not a guarantee of availability. Continue with the city guides or browse our restaurant finder.
