500G TABLE CLUB / MODENA
Modena is about more than tortellini and does not need an endless ranking. Start with five different tables: a family history, a name recognised by the municipality, a contemporary project and two approaches to the osteria. Their common thread is a commitment to local cooking.
How to choose your table
- For family cooking. Bianca, with traditional pasta courses and a location to factor into the route.
- For a piece of city history. Ermes, documented in the municipal register of historic businesses.
- For tradition in the present. Pomposa; Stallo del Pomodoro as an osteria alternative; Tagliatella for shared dishes.
01 / Trattoria Bianca
Address: Via G. B. Spaccini 24, Modena.
The trattoria documents a family history dating to 1948 and dishes including tortellini in broth, passatelli and fresh pasta. Our reason for including it is that continuity in the kitchen. It is outside the most central streets, so check the location when planning.
The 500G view: Family cooking is expressed through pasta courses and local traditions.
02 / Trattoria Ermes
Address: Via Ganaceto 89, Modena.
The municipal record lists Ermes as a historic business and documents a management change in 2023. That verifiable continuity is why it fits our CULT PLACES lens. Ask the restaurant about the current menu rather than relying on dishes mentioned in older reviews.
The 500G view: A longstanding local name continuing under new management.
03 / Trattoria Pomposa al Re Gras
Address: Via Castel Maraldo 57, angolo Via del Voltone 1, Modena.
Part of the Luca Marchini group, Pomposa presents itself as a tribute to Emilian tradition. We use NEW GENERATION here to describe a contemporary approach to a familiar repertoire, rather than simply a recently opened venue. It is in the Piazza Pomposa area.
The 500G view: A contemporary approach using tradition as its starting point.
04 / Osteria Stallo del Pomodoro
Address: Largo Hannover 63, Modena.
An address on Largo Hannover for traditional osteria cooking. We include it to extend the route beyond the most frequently mentioned names. We do not assign a signature dish from an old menu: use the official site and direct contact to check what is available now.
The 500G view: An osteria alternative on a city route, chosen without a ranking.
05 / Trattoria Tagliatella
Address: Via Masone 16, Modena.
The restaurant highlights fresh pasta, gnocco fritto and tigelle, with options for sampling pasta courses. It fits our SHARING IS CARING lens: a meal organised around dishes to share. Check current menu arrangements directly rather than assuming they stay unchanged.
The 500G view: A repertoire made for sharing while keeping pasta in view.
How we selected
An editorial selection based on the venues’ sites and, for Ermes, Modena’s municipal record, checked on 16 October 2026. Our reasons are an editorial interpretation, not scores or accounts of personal visits. Confirm current menus, availability and opening times directly.
All city guides · Find a place · Tortellini, tortelloni and cappelletti: the differences
Distance is part of the choice
Bianca involves a different journey from the more central addresses. If lunch sits between two visits, check the route first. If the day's focus is the table, organise it around your chosen restaurant and leave the rest more open.
Give the service format the same attention. A tasting of first courses and an à la carte choice are not automatically comparable: quantities, timings and ways of sharing differ. Ask how dishes are served and consider what suits the group.
The continuity of a name
A documented history and new management can coexist. The Ermes entry reminds us of this: a long-lived name does not mean every kitchen detail has stayed unchanged. Learning about the current offering respects the work of those carrying it forward today.
The same criterion applies elsewhere. Look at current dishes, booking channels and the full bill, then choose how much time to give lunch. Tradition becomes a reason to get to know a kitchen, without turning a visit into a list of courses to complete.
